The Importance of Pediatric Dental Care

At Associated Pediatric Dental, we understand the importance of oral health as soon as that first baby tooth grows in. Baby teeth pave the way for your child’s permanent teeth. When a baby tooth is lost prematurely to decay or trauma, it can negatively impact the growth and alignment of the incoming permanent tooth. Strong, healthy baby teeth are an important piece of the development and growth of your child, and along with regular dental cleanings, we can help ensure your child knows healthy habits to promote positive, proper oral hygiene as they mature.

Testimonials

We love Associated Pediatric Dentistry. The providers are superior in caring for children, in addition to giving meticulous instructions and recommendations to parents. I can trust their expertise and know I'm receiving the best care in the area for my child’s dentistry needs.

Dr. Kevin and the staff are very friendly and know how to help children even if they have special needs/ diagnoses and issues. Thanks to them my child has actually been able to get past his sensory issues with going to the dentist.
Cheryl Fisher
Best dentist I have ever taken my kids to. All the staff are great and made my very scared daughter feel comfortable. No other dentist could get anything done with her, but they were great and got a tooth pulled.
Lolly Collins
Great dentist for kids! Both of my kids have been patients since age 1, and we have seen a variety of dentists in the office. All have been fabulous. The hygienists, dental assistants, and office staff are also wonderful. Highly recommend!

I have been bringing my children to this practice for many years now. Two of my children have significant special needs. Taking them to the dentist can be challenging due to their needs and also their anxiety towards the visit. The staff at this office is unbelievably accommodating and compassionate and supportive towards our family. They help to make our visit as pleasant as possible.

Dr. Rice and the assistant were absolutely amazing with my daughter. She was so nervous and they explained everything to her before starting. They made sure she was always comfortable throughout the procedure and she is all smiles now!
Mallory Hicks
Amazing staff! Treats special needs with care and concern. Would recommend to anyone searching for a dentist that makes your child not dread the dentist.
Jen Hendricks
My kiddo broke off both of her permanent front teeth at school, and APD worked her in immediately. LaTonya and Dr. Tieg were both immensely patient and kind, took their time to do a great job/give a great result, answered all of our questions, and never made us feel like a burden (even though they had other appointments they were navigating between). I was so impressed with both of them and am so thankful we found APD last year.
Laura Worker
We were referred by our family dentist since my little one was far too little for him. Dr. Mara and her staff did amazing at listening to our concerns, answering all our questions, and performing the procedure we needed done! I highly recommend bringing your little people to associated pediatric dentistry!

We have had nothing but good experiences at this dentist office. The staff has always been positive, respectful and helpful. I also greatly appreciate their scheduling system which sends out an automated text reminding you of your upcoming visit, Yesterday we came in for a semi emergency. Our son had broken two of his front teeth and they needed expert repairing. I have to admit I was really concerned that they would not come out looking well. Dr. Kevin did an amazing job, especially considering the damage done to one of my sons teeth, and Dr. Kevin was very uplifting, reassuring and gentle with my son throughout the whole procedure. His assistant was wonderful as well! I’m very grateful we have these dental professionals in our area. Do not hesitate reaching out to them if you have a kiddo that needs to get their teeth looked at ❤️

FAQ

Why should I take my kids to a pediatric dentist?

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics say that every child should visit a dentist by age one – or as soon as the first tooth appears. Pediatric dental care not only promotes positive, healthy habits from the start but can also help lower dental costs in your child’s future. Children who begin regular dental checkups see healthier teeth and gums. Early checkups help prevent tooth decay, cavities, and other dental issues.

What ages do pediatric dentists treat?

Pediatric dentists are specially trained to diagnose and treat dental problems in infants, children, and teenagers.

Should a parent stay with the child during the visit?

When asked whether or not parents should be in the room with their child during a dental visit, we like to say it depends on the patient’s unique situation. Our goal at Associated Pediatric Dentistry is to work with parents, so we are on the same team with the same mission to improve our patients’ oral health. We are incredibly open to communication to make sure we’re on a unified front, which will make your child’s experience a positive one. We recommend talking with your Associated Pediatric Dentistry team at one of our locations – O’Fallon, Belleville, or Glen Carbon, Illinois – to discuss your child’s visit, what you are comfortable with and what is best for your child during their visit.

How often should I bring my child in for routine dental checkups?

Children should visit the dentist at least once every six months. Regular 6-month checkups allow our pediatric dentists to determine the effectiveness of your child’s brushing and can identify cavities. Regular checkups also allow for dental care performed by the pediatric dentist, including cleanings, fluoride treatment, dental exam, and x-ray. Regular checkups that yield healthy results display the effectiveness of consistent dental visits and show that regular cleaning, fluoride treatment, and more are working to keep your child’s smile healthy and bright!
