# Pediatric Tooth Extractions

## “Wiggles” to help teeth come out

![Extractions - 2](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Extractions-Img.png)

Sometimes, removing a tooth is the best option for restoring the health of the child’s mouth. Our dentists may recommend an extraction at the request of an orthodontist or when a tooth is:

- infected by periodontal (gum) disease
- significantly damaged or decayed
- impacted (stuck) in the mouth
- having complications from trauma
- delayed exfoliation

If it is determined that an extraction is needed, the dentist may perform this during your child’s regular visit or may schedule another visit for this procedure.

Our dentists will do everything in their power to ensure that your child is comfortable during the treatment. Nitrous oxide may be recommended to assist your child through this procedure.

Our children’s dentist offices in [Belleville](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/belleville/), [Glen Carbon](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/glen-carbon/), [Mount Vernon](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/mt-vernon/) and [O’Fallon Illinois](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/ofallon/) several different types of common teeth extractions. Tooth extractions vary in cost depending on the tooth extraction procedure, so we recommend reaching out to your insurance company for more information. Common teeth extraction procedures may include:

- Basic teeth extraction
- Wisdom teeth extraction
- Impacted teeth extraction
- Surgical extraction

## What to do for your child after an extraction

Make sure your child follows the dentist’s instructions after the extraction. These may include, but are not limited to:

- Consuming a soft diet
- Avoiding sticky foods or foods with soft edges
- No drinking out of a straw
- Avoid excessive rinsing or spitting

A children’s dose of Tylenol or Advil may be given if your child is still experiencing discomfort the day after an extraction. An ice pack or cold cloth can also be applied to relieve swelling and discomfort. We recommend monitoring your child after the tooth extraction and check for signs of infection, nausea or vomiting, excessive swelling, fever or other unusual symptoms. If you’re unsure or worries about your child, please reach out to our children’s dentist offices in [Belleville](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/belleville/), [Glen Carbon](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/glen-carbon/), [Mount Vernon](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/mt-vernon/) and [O’Fallon Illinois](https://associatedpediatricdentistry.com/ofallon/) for guidance during business hours or call our after hour emergency number at [(618) 338-5437](tel:6183385437).
