Most kids should be seen for a dental cleaning and routine exam every six months or as recommended by your child’s dentist. During the cleaning, plaque and calculus (calcified plaque) will be removed from the teeth leaving behind a bright and polished smile.

What are the benefits of routine cleanings for children?

Although routine brushing and flossing at home are necessary to keep your child’s smile looking bright, visiting the dentist for a routine cleaning is essential! By regularly seeing the dentist for exams and cleanings every six months, your child can:

  • Prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath
  • Avoid costly and extensive dental procedures
  • Reduce staining and plaque build up from food and drinks
  • Keep their little smile bright!

Routine dental cleaning services, which can include teeth cleanings, teeth polishing, teeth flossing and guidance on effective teeth brushing and flossing, will significantly help with maintaining good oral health. These teeth care routines will help remove stains caused by children drinking or eating certain foods, while keeping their teeth and gums healthy, avoiding high dental costs in the future due to the onset of periodontal disease.

The exam

During the exam, the dentist will thoroughly examine your child’s teen and gums by using a small mirror to look around to see the inside of the patient’s mouth. Our dentists will look inside to identify any potential dental issues. Diagnostic x-rays (radiographs) are also taken periodically to help detect possible cavities in-between teeth that cannot otherwise be seen. The exam will conclude with a professional cleaning where our dentists use a scaler to remove any build-up of plaque and tartar from the teeth. There are manual and electric/ultrasonic scalers for teeth. Manual scalers are used to scrape plaque and tartar off teeth, and they are not as quick as electronic or ultrasonic scalers.
